I am a paleoclimatologist and paleolimnologist who uses lake sediments to reconstruct past climate, environmental change, and human activity.
By combining lipid biomarkers, hyperspectral imaging, sediment geochemistry, and robust chronologies, I reconstruct changes in temperature, hydroclimate, ecosystems, pollution, and land use. My field sites span from some of the northernmost lakes on Earth at 83.5° N, to the high Andes of Ecuador, to the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands.
The questions that drive my research lie where climate, ecosystems, and people meet: Why did Norse communities leave Greenland? How did people survive in northernmost Greenland 4,500 years ago? How profoundly did medieval farming reshape European biodiversity? And how rapidly can the Arctic warm?
Alongside my research, I am committed to creating a fairer, more connected, and sustainable environment for early-career researchers in Switzerland and beyond. I co-founded and chair the Global SNSF Fellows Network, an international platform built by and for GSFN fellows.
